Smallholder View on Compliance: Opportunities and Challenges

Personal statement

Smallholders have a major role in feeding their country's population. I have always been fascinated by their passion and hard work despite their daily challenges. I truly believe that GLOBALG.A.P. and its stakeholders have the potential to make a difference in the world by supporting smallholders to leap out of poverty while producing sustainable and safe food for their local market. I am very excited to attend the GLOBALG.A.P. SUMMIT 2024 to discuss the challenges of smallholders and seek collective action!

About

Manal is the founder of Blue Moon LLC in Egypt. She has been engaged with voluntary sustainability standards governing agriculture and food production as early as 1998, including standards such as GLOBALG.A.P. Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA), LEAF Marque, International Demeter Biodynamic Standard, BioSuisse Organic Production, BRCGS Food Standard, BRCGS Ethical Trade and Responsible Sourcing Standard, ETI UK-SEDEX/SMETA, BSCI, and Fairtrade.

Her extensive personal experience with the GLOBALG.A.P. IFA standard and the daily lives of smallholders in various countries around the world – such as Egypt, Kenya, Lebanon, Mauritania, Mozambique, Nigeria, Peru, Tanzania, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, and South Africa – has led her to the role of observer for smallholders on the GLOBALG.A.P. Fruit and Vegetables Technical Committee. She is also a member of the GLOBALG.A.P. Focus Group for Environmental Sustainability in Crop Production.

Manal has worked as a licensed auditor for FLOCERT and has audited producers and traders of fruit and vegetables, flowers, and cotton against Fairtrade standards in Egypt, Kenya, and Tanzania. She is currently a team member of the BRCGS Compliance team for audits in the Middle East, and an approved training partner for the BRCGS Food Standard and Ethical Trade and Responsible Sourcing Standard.

Blue Moon is an Egyptian private company that is founded to help improve local practices, drive convergence, and empower producers to earn the trust of the international supply chain. Since its inception in 2008, Blue Moon has been focusing on value creation in the agribusiness sector through stakeholder synergies, the most important of which are the Egyptian Suppliers Ethical Trade Forum, the USAID-funded Premium Project for Small Growers, the Care Egypt Foundation, and the GLOBALG.A.P. capacity-building program for smallholders.
